The effect of inferotemporal or foveal prestriate ablation on serial reversal learning in monkeys.

چکیده
Visual discrimination performance during serial reversal learning was studied in monkeys with inferotemporal or foveal prestriate lesions. Bothgroups"were equally impaired in acquisition of the discrimination when compared with normal monkeys. They also learned the reversal series more slowly than control subjects. The reversal deficit of monken with inferotemporallesions was more severe than their acquisitio'n deficit though over successive reversals they :a::hieved normal performance. Monkeys with foveal prestriate lesions were'less impaired in reversalleaming than in acquisition of the discrimination problem. These results are interpreted in !crms of qualitative differences in tne effects of the two lesions.

Prefrontal-inferotemporal interaction is not always necessary for reversal learning.
Prefrontal cortex (PFC) is thought to have a wide-ranging role in cognition, often described as executive function or behavioral inhibition. A specific example of such a role is the inhibition of representations in more posterior regions of cortex in a "top-down" manner, a function thought to be tested by reversal learning tasks. The direct action of PFC on posterior regions can be directly tes...
متن کاملInferotemporal versus combined pulvinar-prestriate lesions in the rhesus monkey: effects on color, object and pattern discrimination.
Monkeys with inferotemporal lesions were compared to monkeys with combined lesions of the pulvinar and prestriate cortex on discrimination problems and on tests of sensory function. Inferotemporal lesions severely impaired discrimination of colors, objects, and patterns, but did not produce any sensory loss. By contrast, combined pulvinar-prestriate lesions impaired only discrimination of patte...
متن کاملDisconnection of the amygdala from visual association cortex impairs visual reward-association learning in monkeys.
Cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) were trained in a task that assessed their ability to associate visual stimuli with food reward. Acquisition of stimulus-reward associations was measured under 2 conditions, a 2-stimuli acquisition condition and a 1-stimulus acquisition condition. On each trial in the 2-stimuli condition, the positive (correct) and negative (incorrect) stimuli were prese...
متن کاملConcurrent discrimination learning of monkeys after hippocampal, entorhinal, or fornix lesions.
Ablations of anterior inferotemporal cortex in monkeys are known to impair learning when discriminations between members of several pairs of objects are taught concurrently. This deficit has been attributed to a loss of visual mnemonic functions. But ablations of hippocampus have also been shown to impair retention, and this impairment transcends the visual modality. Therefore, in the first of ...
متن کاملSevere Scene Learning Impairment, but Intact Recognition Memory, after Cholinergic Depletion of Inferotemporal Cortex Followed by Fornix Transection
To examine the generality of cholinergic involvement in visual memory in primates, we trained macaque monkeys either on an object-in-place scene learning task or in delayed nonmatching-to-sample (DNMS). Each monkey received either selective cholinergic depletion of inferotemporal cortex (including the entorhinal cortex and perirhinal cortex) with injections of the immunotoxin ME20.4-saporin or ...
