Functional Development of Visual Pathways in Larval Sardines and Anchovies1

چکیده
One of the principal purposes of studying the nervous system is t o correlate the observed gross and microscopic structure with the dynamic activity of the animal, that is, its behavior patterns. Coordinated swimming movements, feeding, and schooling can be observed in larval fish as soon as the neural pathways, sensory and motor, are sufficiently developed. On the other hand, mating and spawning behavior, which frequently involve extensive migratory movements, require sexual maturity and stimulation from endocrine glands. This paper describes centers and fiber tracts in the central nervous system of sardine and anchovy which are involved in relaying visual information. Evidence is presented concerning the time during larval development when these morphological features make their first appearance. Virtually nothing is known about the developing nervous system in sardine and anchovy larvae, and no detailed study of the optic system of these fish exists. Therefore, extensive larval and some adult material of the two species was examined for the present paper. The species used were Xardinops caerulea (Girard) and Engraulis mordax (Girard) . Isolated brains of adult specimens, fixed in ten percent neutralized formalin, were cut a t 10 micra in transverse and sagittal serial sections; all sections were mounted and stained by the Kluver-Barrera (1953) or by the Ziesmer-Bodian (1952) method. Different methods of silver impregnation were tried on larval stages. Best results were obtained with the Ramon-Pyridine (1911) and the Bodian (Ziesmer, 1952) methods.

Ontogeny of the eye of Caspian kutum (Rutilus frisii kutum) from prehatch to final larval stage
The present study examines the developmental stages of the eye retina in Caspian kutum during the pre-hatch stage to end of the larval stage. Fertilized eggs of Caspian kutum were obtained from Shahid Ansari Center for Reproduction of teleost fish (Guilan province, Iran). Sampling was done for one month until the larval stage completed and the yolk sac completely depleted. Samples were studied ...

The ovigerous females of Upogebia (Upogebia assisi) were collected from Pacha (24o 50 54"N, 66o 43 E) on October 6 and 7, 1994 and 1995 respectively. They were kept for rearing under laboratory conditions at room temperature (25-32oC) in the filtered seawater with salanity of 35-36 parts per thousand (ppt) and pH 7.8-9. Development of larvae proceeds from first to three or four zoeal and p...

Background: The Endothelial PAS domain-containing protein 1 (EPSA1) is the key transcriptional regulator of hypoxic response and Vascular Permeability Factor (VPF) is an important growth factor for vascular development and angiogenesis. OBJECTIVES: In the present study, the levels of the EPSA1 coding gene and VPF transcripts were evaluated during Larval development of Beluga, Huso huso. METHODS...

New carp hybrids are being developed for the aquaculture industry to support rising seafood demands. The present study was carried out to observe the changes in digestive tract, histology and functional capabilities of the new hybrid carp larvae for a better understanding of its digestive capability and the prediction of its best weaning time to a compound diet. A tubal digestive tract was elon...
متن کاملLarval optic nerve and adult extra-retinal photoreceptors sequentially associate with clock neurons during Drosophila brain development.
The visual system is one of the input pathways for light into the circadian clock of the Drosophila brain. In particular, extra-retinal visual structures have been proposed to play a role in both larval and adult circadian photoreception. We have analyzed the interactions between extra-retinal structures of the visual system and the clock neurons during brain development. We first show that the...
