Comparison of the fatty acid composition of individual phospholipids from rat heart and its mitochondria

Introduction In recent years, a wealth of studies have appeared addressing the effect of exercise on the fatty acid composition of animal tissues. In the vast majority of these studies, fatty acid analysis has been performed in whole tissues and, as far as phospholipids are concerned, without separating their species. No study has analyzed the fatty acid profile of all individual phospholipids in the heart. Additionally, no animal or human study has analyzed the fatty acid profile of individual phospholipids in heart mitochondria. If mitochondrial membranes differ from other cellular membranes in fatty acid composition, alterations because of endurance training may create a fictitious image of change in the whole tissue even though no change may have occurred in the fatty acid composition of any cellular membrane. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine whether the fatty acid composition of the phospholipids in rat heart mitochondria differs from that of the whole tissue.
