چکیده

We present the first experimental results on waveguide-type all-NbN SIS receivers fabricated on MgO substrates designed in a frequency range from 780 to 960 GHz. The receiver has a resonant distributed SIS junction one wavelength long at 870 GHz as the tuning circuit and a diagonal feed horn. The mixer chip was fabricated with accuracies of less than 10 im in width and +/5 jam in thickness by optimizing the cutting and polishing conditions for MgO substrates and was successfully mounted in a waveguide-mixer block. Using a conventional Y-factor method for receiver noise measurement, a minimum DSB receiver noise temperature of 700 K was obtained at an LO frequency of 770 GHz. The contribution to noise made by the input system was dominant in receiver noise and the input noise temperature was more than 300 K over the measured band.

Design and Performance of Waveguide Mixers with All NbN tunnel junctions on MgO substrates

In this paper we present the development of low-noise waveguide mixers with NbN/AlN/NbN tunnel junctions at frequency approaching 1THz. The mixer was designed to be compatible with MgO substrate. Mixers of such a design demonstrated much improved receiver sensitivity. The improvement is a result of reduction of signal dissipation in waveguide and leakage into IF port by adopting a full-height w...

Design and Analysis of a Waveguide NbN-based SIS Mixer using a Tuning Circuit with Two Half-Wavelength Distributed Junctions for the 900-GHz Band

We designed a waveguide SIS mixer based on NbN for the 900-GHz band. The waveguide mixer block with an MgO substrate was designed using Hewlett Packard's High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) and uses a waveguide-to-microstip transition. Simulation by HFSS showed that a source impedance of around 60 12 can be achieved from 786 to 988 GHz by using an MgO substrate about 30 gra thick. The tun...

Quasi-optical submillimeter-wave SIS mixers with NbN/A1N/NbN tunnel junctions

We report on low-noise heterodyne mixing with NbN/A1N/NbN tunnel junctions in the submillimeter-wave region for the first time. The receiver consists of the quasi-optical NbN SIS mixer with an integrated tuning circuit in which a radial short stub tuner is incorporated to resonate out the junction capacitance for RF matching and a balanced IF circuit for broadband IF matching. The prepared NbN ...

Separating SIS Mixer-Preamplifier

The ALMA Band 6 (211-275 GHz) receivers use sideband-separating SIS mixer-preamplifiers with dual 4-12 GHz IF outputs. The sideband-separating mixers are of the phasing type, with the LO driving two component mixers in-phase and the RF signal connected to the mixers through a quadrature hybrid. The IF outputs of the mixers are amplified, then combined in a quadrature hybrid which separates the ...
