چکیده

The latest memoir of the Society for Endocrinology presents the papers and discussions of a 1958 symposium on selected aspects of comparative and human sex morphology. It is gratifying that discussions of bacteria and invertebrate forms are included. Several authors examine the important question of genetic and hormonal controls of sex differentiation. The possibility of regulating the sex ratio at conception is considered, and so are the origin and grafting of ovarian germ cells and endocrine tissue, nuclear chromatin, failure of normal sexual differentiation, secondary manifestations of sexuality and other important topics. As is not unusual in a rapidly developing field, terminology occasionally presents a problem. (A separate conference essaying to standardize confused terms in the field of reproduction could be really valuable-conference organizers please take note!) Discussions of the papers, bibliographies, and an adequate index are included. Printing and binding are good. Naturally no single symposium can include reviews of all aspects of such a broad topic. The papers which were presented, however, are authoritative, clear, and useful. THOMAS R. FORBES

A rapid technique for the estimation of polynucleotide adenylyltransferase and ribonucleic Acid polymerase in plant tissues.

Nucleic acid-dependent polynucleotide adenylytransferase (EC 2.7.7.19) and ribonucleic acid polymerase (EC 2.7.7.6) have been partially purified from maize tissues (Zea mays L.) utilizing ammonium sulfate precipitation and batch diethylaminoethylcellulose chromatography. The technique is applicable to the simultaneous processing of up to eight samples of plant tissue and affords a rapid and rep...

Isolation and characterization of a polynucleotide phosphorylase from Bacillus amyloliquefaciens.

Bacillus amyloliquefaciens BaM-2 produces large amounts of extracellular enzymes, and the synthesis of these proteins appears to be dependent upon abnormal ribonucleic acid metabolism. A polynucleotide phosphorylase (nucleoside diphosphate:polynucleotide nucleotidyl transferase) was identified, purified, and characterized from this strain. The purification scheme involved cell disruption, phase...

Effect of Helicteres isora Bark Extract on Protein Metabolism and Marker Enzymes in Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats

The present study investigated the possible protective effect of Helicteres isora (Sterculiaceae) bark extracts on certain biochemical markers in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes in rats. STZ treatment (60 mg/kg/i.p) caused a hyperglycemic state that led to various physiological and biochemical alterations. Blood levels of glucose, urea, uric acid and creatinine, plasma levels of albumin a...

Purification and characterization of polynucleotide phosphorylase from cucumber.

Polynucleotide phosphorylase (polyribonucleotide:orthophosphate nucleotidyltransferase, EC 2.7.7.8) activity has been found in many prokaryotes and studied in detail since 1955. Such enzymes have been detected also in plants. We now describe the purification of polynucleotide phosphorylase from cucumber cotyledons and leaves. This enzyme is a complex of three subunits, possibly not identical, o...

Purification of polynucleotide phosphorylase by affinity chromatography and some properties of the purified enzymes.

A method is described for the preparation of p-aminophenyl oligo(dT)-Sepharose. This matrix has been used for the purification of polynucleotide phosphorylase from both E.coli and B.stearothermophilus. The effects of temperature and pH on the binding of the different enzymes to the matrix have been investigated. B.stearothermophilus isolated by affinity chromatography may be useful in selective...
