Neutron diffraction from sound-excited crystals

چکیده

A longitudinal sound wave modulates the regular arrangement of the atomic planes of a crystal in two ways: first, the spacing between the atomic planes is modified in the regions of compression and expansion introducing a macroscopic strain and, second, the lattice planes acquire a velocity in the oscillating strain field. Bragg reflection in a strained crystal maintains the energy of the radiation, whereas Bragg reflection by a moving lattice provokes a Doppler shift of the radiation. In a diffraction experiment both these effects lead to an enlarged bandwidth of the reflection curve. The relative importance of strain and Doppler depends mainly on the radiation used. For thermal neutron scattering the profile of the rocking curve of a Bragg reflection may permit to separate the two effects. Atomic amplitudes of the sound field of 136 A peak to peak in the bulk of the crystal can be deduced from the rocking profile. The enlarged bandwidth of a sound-excited crystal opens a possibility for diffraction-based optical elements where the trade-off between resolution and intensity can be readily modified. Will gradient crystals become available for neutron diffraction?

We report on a novel approach to grow massive Si 1 _,Gex crystals by a low pressure chemical vapor deposition technique . In particular, we attempt to synthesize gradient crystals suited as monochromators in neutron(and X-ray) scattering. Structural parameters for a large number of Si t _xGex deposits have been analysed by various techniques from materials science and representative examples ar...

A Frozen Spin Target for Neutron Diffraction Measurements of Proteins Crystals

Neutron scattering from protein crystals has been used successfully to determine protein structure. This technique achieves its best results when used with large crystal samples, or with samples that are amenable to techniques such as deuteration. In the case of small or delicate protein crystals, sample polarization has been identified as a method to greatly increase the signal to noise ratio ...

Picosecond Holographic Grating Generation of Ultrasonic Waves

The picosecond holographic grating generation and detection of ultrasonic waves are described. Two mechanisms, a heating mechanism and a stimulated Brillouin scattering mechanism, are described. These permit the generation of tunable ultrasonic waves in the MHz to GHz range. It is demonstrated that the two mechanisms can be distinguished by the distinct time dependences of the diffraction of a ...

Diffraction Gratings for Neutrons from Polymers and Holographic Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystals

We discuss the applicability of holographically recorded gratings in photopolymers and holographic polymer-dispersed liquid crystals as neutron optical elements. An experimental investigation of their properties for light and neutrons with different grating spacings and grating thicknesses is performed. The angular dependencies of the diffraction efficiencies for those gratings are interpreted ...

Ultrasound-Induced Gradient Crystals Observed by High-Energy X-rays

High-energy X-ray scattering (90 keV) has been performed at the high-energy beamline ID15 at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, Grenoble, on perfect Si crystals excited by compressional ultrasound waves in the [111] direction. Two-dimensional intensity maps of the 351 Bragg peak reveal a purely longitudinal distortion of the lattice with respect to the applied distortion field, which ...
