Impedance platelet count in severe microcytosis - study of 161 patients
نویسنده
چکیده
IntroductionPlatelet count estimation is an important element of the diagnostic and treatment process in many disorders. The present study aims to determine the incidence of improper impedance platelet count in severe microcytosis and to state the sensitivity and specificity of various parameters like histogram, red cell distribution width (RDW), mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet flags Methods-Total 161 patients with mean corpuscular volume less than 60 femtoliter and impedance platelet count more than 150 x 10 /L were included. The samples were analyzed on CellDyn 3700 cell counter. Manual platelet count and stained peripheral smear review was done in each case. ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristics) analysis was used for MPV, RDW and histogram. Results-18.01 %(29/161) patients did not show corelation between impedance and manual platelet count. For “Do not corelate” group mean platelet volume(>12.7 femtoliter)showed 79.55% specificity and 55.17% sensitivity, Abnormal Platelet/RBC histogram(>40%) showed 76.51% specificity and 51.72 % sensitivity and RDW > 27 % showed 87.12 % sensitivity and 37.93 % specificity. Conclusion-Impedance platelet count is not always reliable in cases of severe microcytosis. Abnormal MPV and RBC/platelet histogram gives good hint for the same.

Whole blood impedance aggregometry as a biomarker for the diagnosis and prognosis of severe sepsis
INTRODUCTION Sepsis leads to an activation of the immune system and hemostatis. However, studies on platelet aggregation in severe sepsis using impedance aggregometry have not been performed and the diagnostic and prognostic capabilities are unknown. In the present study we hypothesized that impedance aggregometry findings might serve as a biomarker for the diagnosis and prognosis of severe sep...
متن کاملDengue with Normal Platelet Count and no Hemoconcentration: Automated Hematogram in Cases with Underlying Thalassemia
Dear Editor, Dengue is an important arbovirus infection. This infection can result in an acute febrile illness. The important hematological abnormalities included hemoconcentration and thrombocytopenia (1). Due to the decreased platelet count, the patient might develop petechiae and hemorrhagic complication. In endemic area, the presumptive diagnosis of dengue is usually derived by the cl...

Background: The purpose of the present study was to examine the role of mean platelet volume (MPV) in comparison with Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA), quick SOFA (qSOFA), and Mortality in Severe Sepsis in the Emergency Department (MISSED) scoring systems in predicting hospital mortality among patients with severe sepsis. Methods: This follow-up stud...

ITP is an autoimmune disorder, due to increased platelet destruction. This condition may be acute, chronic or recurrent. In the acute form, the platelet count returns to normal within 6 months after diagnosis. In the chronic form, the platelet count remains low beyond 6 months. In approximately 90% of children ITP is acute and self-limited disease. Splenectomy is indicated for severe acute ...
متن کاملPlatelet count and MPV, routinely measured but ignored parameters used in conjunction with the diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome: single study center in Iranian population, 2010
Background: Myocardial infarction is the major cause of morbidity and mortality in industrialized countries. Platelet count and the mean platelet volume (MPV), a simple and reliable indicator of platelet size which correlates with platelet activation, might associate with troponin in acute chest pain. Methods: We analyzed MPV of 851 patients who were admitted to Rasoul-e-Akram Hospital with ac...
