Kruskal (1954, 1959), Dagnelie (1960) and Sokal and Sneath (1963), but it is doubtful whether even these extensive collections are complete. For general consideration, suppose that two groups (i) and (j) fuse to form a.group (k); then, extending (and slightly altering) the symbolism of Williams, Lambert and Lance (1966), we shall need to distinguish between three types of measure: (i)-measures, which define a property of a group, (i,j)-measures, which define a resemblance or diff."erence between two groups, and (i j, k)-measures, which define some difference between the original two groups, considered jointly, and that formed by their fusion. Of these, (i)-measures are confined to clusterin!! techniques except in so far as they may be incidentally required in the course of calculation of (ij, k)-measures. Secondly, the chosen measure has to be incorporated into a "sorting strategy" whereby groups of elemcnts are extracted. Selected sorting strategies have received some comparative study (Sokal and Michener, 1958; Soka1 and Sneath, 1963; Williams and Dale, 1965; Williams, Lambert and Lance, 1966), but until recently have bcen regarded as separate and largely unrelated syslems. In a recent brier communication (Lance and Williams, 19Mb) we have pointed out that the five best-known hierarchical strategies are, for at least one of the (i,j)-measures, variants of a single linear system which will, moreover, generate an infinite set of new strategies. It is with the further generalization of this system that we are now concerned. Ageneral theory of classificatory sorting strategies 1. Hierarchical systems

"During the late 1950s and early 1960s, numerous methods for grouping individuals had been devised. The major difficulty was that each one had special properties, and thus attractions for the user, but each had to be specially programmed for a computer. (All classificatory strategies require the use of a digital computer because of the very large amount of arithmetic which has to be done.) My c...
متن کاملFuzzy Hierarchical Location-Allocation Models for Congested Systems
There exist various service systems that have hierarchical structure. In hierarchical service networks, facilities at different levels provide different types of services. For example, in health care systems, general centers provide low-level services such as primary health care services, while the specialized hospitals provide high-level services. Because of demand congestion in service networ...
متن کاملComplexity in Classificatory Reasoning
Classificatory reasoning involves the tasks of concept evaluation and classification, which may be performed with use of the strategies of concept matching and concept activation, respectively. Different implementations of the strategies of concept matching and concept activation are possible, where an implementation is characterized by the organization of knowledge and the control of informati...
متن کاملA Summary of Block Schemes for Reducing aGeneral Matrix
Various strategies have been proposed for arriving at block algorithms for reducing a general matrix to Hessenberg form by means of orthogonal similarity transformations. This paper reviews and systematicallycategorizes the various strategies and discusses their computational characteristics.

Background and Aim: E-learning is an important topic in the educational settings and students are significant prerequisites of it, who have an essential role for the acceptance and effective use of e-learning management systems so that knowing their attitudes and mental models is essential for the successful implementation of such a method. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate...
