Finding Dense Subgraphs

چکیده
In this paper we establish that the Lovász θ function on a graph can be restated as a kernel learning problem. We introduce the notion of SVM−θ graphs, on which Lovász θ function can be approximated well by a Support vector machine (SVM). We show that Erdös-Rényi random G(n, p) graphs are SVM−θ graphs for log4 n n ≤ p< 1. Even if we embed a large clique of size Θ (√ np 1−p ) in a G(n, p) graph the resultant graph still remains a SVM−θ graph. This immediately suggests an SVM based algorithm for recovering a large planted clique in random graphs. Associated with the θ function is the notion of orthogonal labellings. We introduce common orthogonal labellings which extends the idea of orthogonal labellings to multiple graphs. This allows us to propose a Multiple Kernel learning (MKL) based solution which is capable of identifying a large common dense subgraph in multiple graphs. Both in the planted clique case and common subgraph detection problem the proposed solutions beat the state of the art by an order of magnitude.

Discovering Large Dense Subgraphs in Massive Graphs
We present a new algorithm for finding large, dense subgraphs in massive graphs. Our algorithm is based on a recursive application of fingerprinting via shingles, and is extremely efficient, capable of handling graphs with tens of billions of edges on a single machine with modest resources. We apply our algorithm to characterize the large, dense subgraphs of a graph showing connections between ...
متن کاملA dense subgraph based algorithm for compact salient image region detection
We present an algorithm for graph based saliency computation that utilizes the underlying dense subgraphs in finding visually salient regions in an image. To compute the salient regions, the model first obtains a saliency map using random walks on a Markov chain. Next, k-dense subgraphs are detected to further enhance the salient regions in the image. Dense subgraphs convey more information abo...
متن کاملOn Finding Dense Common Subgraphs
We study the recently introduced problem of finding dense common subgraphs: Given a sequence of graphs that share the same vertex set, the goal is to find a subset of vertices S that maximizes some aggregate measure of the density of the subgraphs induced by S in each of the given graphs. Different choices for the aggregation function give rise to variants of the problem that were studied recen...
متن کاملFinding Dense Subgraphs for Sparse Undirected, Directed, and Bipartite Graphs
This paper presents a method for identifying a set of dense subgraphs of a given sparse graph. Within the main applications of this “dense subgraph problem”, the dense subgraphs are interpreted as communities, as in, e.g., social networks. The problem of identifying dense subgraphs helps analyze graph structures and complex networks and it is known to be challenging. It bears some similarities ...

Protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks, providing a comprehensive landscape of protein interacting patterns, enable us to explore biological processes and cellular components at multiple resolutions. For a biological process, a number of proteins need to work together to perform the job. Proteins densely interact with each other, forming large molecular machines or cellular building blocks....
