Comparative aspects of human vitamin K metabolism and nutriture.

چکیده
phylloquinone (vitamin K1) versus menaquinones (vitamins K2), and their relative contribution in meeting the needs for vitamin K, not only for the synthesis of the hepatic coagulation factors but also for the less well understood vitamin K-dependent carboxylation reactions in other tissues such as bone. Largely unanswered questions surround the comparative intermediary metabolism and transport of phylloquinone and menaquinones and their comparative intracellular distribution and in vivo activity. Perhaps the most perplexing question is the nutritional origin of tissue menaquinones (MKs) and more specifically:-does the enormous microfloral population of the large intestine provide an important nutritional source of vitamin K or are MKs largely of dietary origin? Another area of possible comparision is health versus disease. For example an important question is how various disease states may influence the metabolism and hence the needs for vitamin K or our perception of these needs. Some results pertaining to the above questions are addressed below.

The physiology of vitamin K nutriture and vitamin K-dependent protein function in atherosclerosis.
Recent advances in the discovery of new functions for vitamin K-dependent (VKD) proteins and in defining vitamin K nutriture have led to a substantial revision in our understanding of vitamin K physiology. The only unequivocal function for vitamin K is as a cofactor for the carboxylation of VKD proteins which renders them active. While vitamin K was originally associated only with hepatic VKD p...

Reported are estimates of the prevalence in developing countries of physiologically significant vitamin A deficiency and the number of attributable deaths. The WHO classification of countries by the severity and extent of xerophthalmia was used to categorize developing countries by likely risk of subclinical vitamin A deficiency. Using vital statistics compiled by UNICEF, we derived population ...
متن کاملLong-term marginal intakes of zinc and retinol affect retinol homeostasis without compromising circulating levels during lactation in rats.
Marginal zinc or vitamin A intake is more common than previously thought in industrialized and developing countries, with pregnant and lactating women believed to be particularly at risk. However, the lack of sensitive indicators of zinc and vitamin A status precludes accurate assessment of marginal nutriture. Concurrent deficiencies in zinc and vitamin A intake often coexist, and the interacti...
متن کاملEffects of Vitamins K in Neonates and Young Infants
Vitamin K is required for the hepatic production of blood coagulation factors II, VII, IX and X. The term vitamin K refers to a variety of fat-soluble 2-methyl-1, 4-naphthoquinone derivatives. Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) occurs in green plants, while vitamin K2 (menaquinone) is synthesized by microbial in the gut. The recommended dose of vitamin K in neonates is 1 mg intramuscularly. For infants...
