Brain Biomechanics : Steady - State Consolidation Theory of Hydrocephalus

چکیده

In this paper we apply Biot's classical theory of consolidation to the brain in simplified geometry, in order to find explicit formulas for its response to internally applied loads. We show that the observed brain compliance can be understood in terms of Biot's concept of jacketed compressibility, with the result that the Poisson ratio is considerably less than the value 112 used in early numerical simulations of hydrocephalus. Using existing data, we also derive approximate values for both the shear modulus and the Poisson ratio of the brain.

Brain Biomechanics: Consolidation Theory of Hydrocephalus. Variable Permeability and Transient Effects

The quasi-steady linear consolidation theory is applied to a model brain under hydrodynamic loading, due to a step increase of intracranial pressure, in order to gain insights into the onset and evolution of hydrocephalus and brain edema in children. Simple asymptotic formulas are derived that shed light on the transient behavior of the dynamics of filtration and of the deformation of the solid...

Comparison of Radial Consolidation Behavior of Clay under Three Types of Cyclic Loading

Vertical drains and stone columns which have been used in infrastructure construction for highways, ports, coastal regions, etc., provide significant benefits for improving soil characteristics such as reducing the drainage length and accelerating the consolidation process. So the investigation of the radial consolidation is inevitable. Soils may be subjected to cyclic loading such as silos, ta...

Reassessment of brain elasticity for analysis of biomechanisms of hydrocephalus.

This paper presents results from a finite element study of the biomechanics of hydrocephalus, with special emphasis on a reassessment of the parenchyma elastic modulus. A two-dimensional finite element model of the human brain/ventricular system is developed and analysed under hydrocephalic loading conditions. It is shown that the Young's modulus of the brain parenchyma used in previous studies...

Dynamical morphology of the brain’s ventricular cavities in hydrocephalus

Although interest in the biomechanics of the brain goes back over centuries, mathematical models of hydrocephalus and other brain abnormalities are still in their infancy and a much more recent phenomenon. This is rather surprising, since hydrocephalus is still an endemic condition in the pediatric population with an incidence of approximately 1–3 per 1000 births. Treatment has dramatically imp...

Hydrocephalus in Patients With Head Trauma: A Series of 14 Patients

Background and Aim: Hydrocephalus can cause ventricular expansion, which if not treated promptly, can result in brain damage. The hydrocephalus-induced damage is not fully improved, even by means of surgical procedures, leading to permanent damages to the brain. Methods and Materials/Patients: The aim of this study was to evaluate the demographic characteristics as well as hydrocephalus in pat...
