potential propagated by axons. There are two other types of action potentials: (i) the Na!/Ca2!-dependent action potential present in axon terminals or heart muscle cells (Figure 4.2d), for example, where it is responsible for Ca2! entry and an increase of intracellular Ca2! concentration, a necessary prerequisite for neurotransmitter release (secretion) or muscle fibre contraction; and (ii) the Ca2!-dependent action potential (in which Na ions do not participate) in dendrites of Purkinje cells of the cerebellum (see Figure 17.9) and in endocrine cells (Figure 5.1a). In Purkinje cell dendrites, it depolarizes the membrane and thus modulates neuronal integration; in endocrine cells it provides a Ca2! entry to trigger hormone secretion.

Electrophysiological investigation of the cellular effect of anethole, the chief constitute of anise, on F1 neuronal excitability in garden snail

Introduction: Anethole is the main constituent of Pimpinella anisum L. (anise), a herbaceous annual plant which has several therapeutic effects. In the folk medicine, anise is employed as an antiepileptic drug. Specifically, this study was focused on the cellular effect of anethole, an aromatic compound in essential oils from anise and camphor. Anethole has various physiological effects on t...

Loss of functional voltage-gated sodium channels in persistent mumps virus-infected PC12 cells.

Rat pheochromocytoma (PC12) cells, persistently infected with mumps virus (MV), failed to generate full-sized stimulus-evoked action potentials (SEAPs) when examined by intracellular electrophysiological recording techniques. Application of tetrodotoxin (TTX) had little or no effect on MV-reduced SEAPs, indicating that the number of functional voltage-gated Na+ channels was decreased or their o...

Control of action potential-induced Ca2+ signaling in the soma of hippocampal neurons by Ca2+ release from intracellular stores.

Stimulus-induced increases in neuronal Ca2+ concentration are important signaling events for transcriptional regulation and neuronal plasticity. Electrical inputs are thought to mediate Ca2+ responses in the soma by triggering action potentials, which in turn open voltage-gated Ca2+ channels in the somatic plasma membrane. It is not yet known to what extent internal Ca2+ amplification contribut...

Non-voltage-gated calcium channels in snail heart ventricle cells.

1. Two recently identified channel types in Lymnaea stagnalis heart muscle cells were shown to conduct Na+ in the absence of extracellular Ca2+. They did not appear to be 'voltage-gated' as they were not activated by voltage. Also, they remained active over a wide range of membrane potentials. However, they were weakly 'voltage-sensitive' as their activity usually tended to increase with depola...

Ca2+-activated K+ (BK) channel inactivation contributes to spike broadening during repetitive firing in the rat lateral amygdala.

In many neurons, trains of action potentials show frequency-dependent broadening. This broadening results from the voltage-dependent inactivation of K+ currents that contribute to action potential repolarisation. In different neuronal cell types these K+ currents have been shown to be either slowly inactivating delayed rectifier type currents or rapidly inactivating A-type voltage-gated K+ curr...
