Community-acquired pneumonia infections by Acinetobacter baumannii

چکیده
In this issue of Virulence, Asplund et al., provides a proof of principle study indicating that physiological concentrations of alcohol impair macrophage antimicrobial functions against Acinetobacter baumannii (Ab). Thus, this communication delivers seminal evidence that alcohol and macrophages plays a key role the pathogenesis of Ab. Ab is a wide spectrum of intrinsic and acquired multidrug-resistant gram-negative coccobacillus. Ab has the ability to form biofilms on non-viable surfaces, surviving through high temperatures as well as extended periods of desiccation, making it a very resilient pathogen. Therefore, due to its high persistence, pathogenesis, and multidrug resistance, this pathogen has been associated with skin and soft tissue diseases, including necrotizing fasciitis, as well as lethal infections such as pneumonia, which can evolve to septic shock. In addition, in immunosuppressed individuals, Ab is considered a primary causative agent of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP-Ab) especially in association with alcohol abuse resulting in significant high mortality rate >50%. Data around the world indicates that Ab is a leading cause of severe and lethal CAP within various regions of the Asia Pacific such as Taiwan, Hong-Kong, Singapore, and Australia. In the case of biofilm formation, hospital acquired pneumonia caused by Ab (HAP-Ab) is typically acquired by patients in intensive care units via artificial ventilation in which mechanical tubing is Community-acquired pneumonia infections by Acinetobacter baumannii How does alcohol impact the antimicrobial functions of macrophages?

Acinetobacter isolates from eight subjects with community-acquired Acinetobacter pneumonia (CAAP), a major cause of fatal community-acquired pneumonia in tropical Australia, were phenotypically and genotypically confirmed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis analysis to be broadly diverse Acinetobacter baumannii strains. Wet-season throat carriage of A. baumannii was found in 10% of community re...

Acinetobacter baumannii (AB) is a common pathogen found in patients with hospital-acquired pneumonia all over the world. Community-acquired AB pneumonia, however, is very rare and has seldom been reported in Asia-Pacific countries. Community-acquired AB pneumonia has a fulminant course and is associated with a higher mortality than hospital-acquired AB pneumonia. In Korea, no case of fatal comm...
متن کاملA Case of Community-Acquired Pneumonia Caused by Multidrug-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii in Korea
Acinetobacter baumannii is an aerobic Gram-negative coccobacillus that causes nosocomial pneumonia in patients on mechanical ventilation or previously treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics. Nevertheless, community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) caused by A. baumannii, especially multi-drug resistant (MDR) strains, is rare. We experienced the first case of CAP caused by MDR A. baumannii in Korea in ...
متن کاملEndophthalmitis caused by Acinetobacter baumannii: report of two cases.
Acinetobacter baumannii is most often responsible for hospital-acquired infections and is occasionally associated with community-acquired infections. We report two cases of A. baumannii endophthalmitis, one with endogenous endophthalmitis and the other with postkeratoplasty endophthalmitis. Although endophthalmitis is rare, ophthalmologists should be alert to the possibility of patients having ...

Acinetobacter species are aerobic gram-negative organism being responsible for various types of infections such as pneumonia, urinary tract infection and septicemia [1-4]. The Acenitobacter infections have been recognized as an emerging problem and appeared to be associated with high mortality rates throughout the world. Very recently, it has been reported that Acinetobacter species accounts fo...
