Rational Models of Normal Logic Programs

چکیده
In general, the application of the meaning function T P to a normal logic program P results in innnite expressions and, hence, is infeasible in practice. On the other hand, the iteration of T P is of interest for several elds in AI. Therefore, we introduce a new representation of interpretations and adopt T P to this. The resulting function always results in nite expressions of tractable length and overcomes some limitations of usual model generating systems. 1 Motivation Model generation is of interest for several elds in AI. For example, the computation of the extensions of a default logic 7] is a generation of models, and P. N. Johnson{Laird assumes that the human way of reasoning corresponds to the generation of models 3]. Wrt. logic programming, the iteration of the meaning function T P corresponding to a logic program P is the basic method of model generation 1. In general, the application of the meaning function T P corresponding to a normal logic program P results in innnite interpretations of P and is, hence, infeasible in practice. For this reason, model generating systems like SATCHMO 5] can be applied only to range restricted programs 2 : T P (I) is nite if I is a nite interpretation and P is a range restricted program. As stated in 5], every program can easily be transformed into a range restricted program. But, however, T P 0 does not reach a xed point in nite time if P 0 results from such a transformation of a not range restricted program P, even if T P reaches a xed point in nite time. Hence, model generating systems like SATCHMO can not compute complete minimal models of not range restricted programs in nite time. We therefore introduce a new representation of interpretations, viz. so{called rational interpretations, and adopt T P to this. The resulting function S P always yields nite expressions of tractable length. By this, we overcome the problem mentioned above: By the iteration of S P a nite representation of a complete minimal model of P is computed in nite time if T P reaches a xed point in nite number of steps. In the full paper 1] we introduce a distributed architecture performing a distributed computation of S P. This paper is an extended abstract of the work presented in 1] 1 The reader is assumed to be familiar with the …

متن کاملCharacterization of logic program revision as an extension of propositional revision
We address the problem of belief revision of logic programs, i.e., how to incorporate to a logic program P a new logic program Q. Based on the structure of SE interpretations, Delgrande et al. (2008; 2013b) adapted the well-known AGM framework (1985) to logic program (LP) revision. They identified the rational behavior of LP revision and introduced some specific operators. In this paper, a cons...
متن کاملStationary Generated Models of Generalized Logic Programs
The interest in extensions of the logic programming paradigm beyond the class of normal logic programs is motivated by the need of an adequate representation and processing of knowledge. One of the most difficult problems in this area is to find an adequate declarative semantics for logic programs. In the present paper a general preference criterion is proposed that selects the ‘intended’ parti...
متن کاملGenerated Models and Extensions of Nonmonotonic Systems
Stable generated models provide a general semantics for logic programming. Although equal for normal programs, they diier from the answer set semantics on disjunctive programs. We show that stable generated semantics coincide with the semantics obtained by translating programs into a minimal partial temporal logic into which a subsystem of default logic can be embedded. This leads us to a new v...
متن کاملSkeptical Reasoning in FC-Normal Logic Programs is P11-complete
FC-normal logic programs are a generalization by Marek, Nerode, and Remmel of Reiter’s normal default theories. They have the property that, unlike most logic programs, they are guaranteed to have simple stable models. In this paper it is shown that the problem of skeptical reasoning in FC-normal programs is Π1-complete, the same complexity as for logic programs without the restriction of FC-no...
