چکیده

In this paper an extended robust independent components analysis algorithm based on cumulants is applied to identify vibrational alarm signals generated by soldier termites in southern Spain (reticulitermes grassei), measured using low cost equipment. A seismic accelerometer is employed to strongly characterize these acoustic emissions. To support the proposed technique, vibrational signals from a low cost microphone have been mixed with known signals, and the mixtures processed by ICA. The experimental results confirm the validity of the proposed method, which has been taken as the basis for the development of a low cost, noninvasive, termite detection system.

Cluster Analysis of Acoustic Emission Signals for Carbon/Epoxy Composite in Four-point Bending Test (RESEARCH NOTE)

Due to the extensive use of composites in various industries and the fact that defects reduce ultimate strength and efficiency during operation, detection of failures in composite parts is very important. The aim of this paper is to use Acoustic Emission (AE) non-destructive method in four-point bending test of carbon/epoxy composite to analyze and examine the failure mechanisms. This method is...

A Comparison Study of Kernel Functions in the Support Vector Machine and Its Application for Termite Detection

Termites are the most destructive pests and their attacks significantly impact the quality of wooden buildings. Due to their cryptic behavior, it is rarely apparent from visual observation that a termite infestation is active and that wood damage is occurring. Based on the phenomenon of acoustic signals generated by termites when attacking wood, we proposed a practical framework to detect termi...

Design and Application of a Photoacoustic Sensor for Monitoring the Laser Generated Stress Waves in Optical Fiber

Measurement of stress transients generated by a 400ns pulsed HF laser in an infrared fluoride glass fiber has been made using fast time – response piezoelectric film transducer. Acoustic signals up to 12 mV with frequencies ranging in megahertz generated by 21 mJ laser pulse when passed through the fiber axis in the linear region. It is shown that useful information such as onset of non - linea...

Acoustic detection of termite infestations in urban trees.

A portable, low-frequency acoustic system was used to detect termite infestations in urban trees. The likelihood of infestation was rated independently by a computer program and an experienced listener that distinguished insect sounds from background noises. Because soil is a good insulator, termite sounds could be detected easily underneath infested trees, despite the presence of high urban ba...

Study of the Frictional Surface Damage Using Acoustic Emission Method

In this study, the change at rubbing surfaces has been investigated experimentally using an acoustic emission signal monitoring system. A steel ring is slipped on the surface of  a metallic sheet to simulate frictional conditions. The mechanical disturbances caused by the movement of the ring produce stress waves propagating along the sheet surface. The out of plane displacement of the sheet su...
