Why Ethics Commissions? Four Normative Models

Abstract Ethics commissions are government advisory mandated to give expert advice on contentious moral issues. As this requires making explicit value judgments, members with knowledge of ethics have a natural place as such commissions. Apart from these being widespread, their recommendations assume special normative authority within the legislative process. This raises many fundamental questions concerning nature expertise and how should deal political contexts in which they operate. Through reading relevant discussions literature underlying ideals located, article reconstructs four models proper role reconstruction seeks contribute analytical clarity elucidate disagreements our expectations The models, labeled ‘commission consensus model’, ‘society-proxy ‘correctness ‘deep pluralism differ one another terms two main dimensions: public/political dimensions.
