Turning Marx on His Head? North Korean <i>Juche</i> as Developmental Nationalism

The existing literature on North Korea has been divided over whether the country’s state ideology of Juche should be regarded as a variant Soviet Marxism-Leninism or explicit voluntarism means that it viewed distinctive indigenous ideology. Drawing Trotsky’s theory uneven and combined development Gramsci’s ideology, paper argues Korea’s status geopolitically insecure postcolonial country engaged in forced march from “backwardness” to modern industrialized economy had decisive impact both form content Korean Understood developmental nationalism seeks not only legitimize authoritarian rule but also create collective subjectivity suited task rapid catch-up national development, constitutes ideological rests Marxist-Leninist origins deliberately drawn forms “common sense” conducive towards mass mobilization society.
