The Production of Biogenic Silica from Different South African Agricultural Residues through a Thermo-Chemical Treatment Method

نویسندگان

چکیده

A thermo-chemical treatment method was used to produce biogenic amorphous silica from South African sugarcane and maize residues. Different fractions of (leaves, pith, fiber) were processed for production. The biomass samples leached with either 7 wt% citric acid or sulfuric at 353 K 2 h prior being rinsed, dried combusted using a four-step program ranging room temperature 873 in furnace. characterization the pre-treated conducted thermogravimetric analysis (TG/DTA), X-ray fluorescence (XRF) elemental (CHN), while final products characterized by XRF, diffraction (XRD), analysis, nitrogen physisorption scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Citric pre-treatment proved be an attractive alternative mineral acids. Amorphous produced leaves good quality (0.1 residual carbon up 99.3 content). also had great textural properties such as surface area 323 m2 g−1, average pore diameter 5.0 nm, volume 0.41 cm3 g−1.

Quantification of radionuclides and associated radiological risk estimation of coal combustion residues from a South African coal-fired power plant

Background: Radionuclides occur in coal combustion residues, such as fly ash and bottom ash, which are by-products of coal combustion. They pose potential radiological risks to people present in the surrounding areas. Materials and Methods: Gamma spectrometry was performed to determine the radionuclide activity concentrations in a coal-driven power plant located in the Limpopo province, South A...

Physical and chemical characterization of biochars derived from different agricultural residues

Biochar is widely recognized as an efficient tool for carbon sequestration and soil fertility. The understanding of its chemical and physical properties, which are strongly related to the type of the initial material used and pyrolysis conditions, is crucial to identify the most suitable application of biochar in soil. A selection of organic wastes with different characteristics (e.g., rice hus...

Production of Silica Nanoparticles from Rice Husk as Agricultural Waste by Environmental Friendly Technique

Extensive application of silica nanoparticles (SNPs) in various industrial products has led to the development of silica extraction methodologies out of various waste products. Rice husk is an agricultural waste with a high content of amorphous silica. However, the presence of metal ion impurities and unburned carbon in the rice husk content may present an adverse effect on product color and pu...
