The Effect of <i>Zataria multiflora</i> Boiss Leaves Essential Oil on Some Pathogenic Bacteria as an Alternative for Conventional Antibiotics

Objectives: Zataria multiflora Boiss has been used as a conventional medicinal plant for treating infections in traditional medicine. Therefore, the aim of this work was to reveal composition and antibacterial effect leaves essential oil. Materials Methods: Z. oil isolated through two different methods: hydro isolation steam isolation. Essential analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC/MS) its determined. The investigated on gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutants, Staphylococcus epidermidis) gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhimurium) bacteria compared that 12 antibiotics. Results: yields methods were 2.33% 0.33% respectively. Thirtyseven compounds identified using GC/MS, among which carvacrol, thymol, linalool, p-cymene, decane, ?-caryophyllene ?-terpinene dominant compounds. Conclusions: oil, at concentration 80 µL/mL, had strong or similar S. aureus typhimurium some antibiotics study.
