The decadal abrupt change in the global land vapor pressure deficit

The vapor pressure deficit (VPD) is an important variable used to characterize atmospheric aridity. This paper analyses the spatial and temporal characteristics of decadal abrupt change (DAC) in global land VPD after 1980 using monthly scale data from Climatic Research Unit. results show that 60.5% area underwent a significantly increased (IDAC) VPD, persistent IDAC was obvious middle low latitudes Eurasia, Africa parts South America but not central North or Western Siberia. From 2020, most regions experienced no more than two IDACs, while significant increases occurred mainly around Mediterranean eastern America. relatively early Africa, 2000 high latitude regions, Eastern Europe, near Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. where lasted longer 10 years included West Asia, America, East indicating aridity these were obvious. In general, began 1993–2000 other periods before 1990, suggesting experiencing increase has expansion 1990s role water limitation this Central Asia China strengthened. addition, showed another large-scale over region 2009, intensified last decade. At same time, few exhibited decreased changes (DDACs) with durations shorter 2 years.
