The Colostomy Complications in Anorectal Malformation: A Retrospective Study

Abstract Background A colostomy is a surgical approach that creates an opening for the colon, or/and large intestine through abdomen. Anorectal malformations are group of abnormalities rectum and anus present at birth. Objective To analyze common complications in anorectal formations. Methods This was retrospective study conducted on 50 temporary colostomies performed children Surgical Department Abu Ghraib General Hospital period from January 2018 to 2020. Information collected regarding patients' age, sex, body weight, associated anomalies, types sites, indications colostomies. Results total 44 (88%) cases were reported children's 1st month life. The ratio male female 1:1. Pelvic 48 (96%) patients, as 40 (80%) underwent loop-type, 8 (16%) patients double-barrel colostomy. Transverse two patients. Prolapse occurred 50% skin excoriations 22% . 10% developed sepsis. Bleeding seen 4% after performance. Stenosis presented 6% children, this corrected by repeated dilatation re-fashioning. Obstruction intestines observed one patient. retraction Conclusions Imperforate most indication stoma formation pediatric age group. Loop type used, it had highest rate complications. Prolapses excoriation found.
