Systematic inactivation and phenotypic characterization of two-component signal transduction systems of Enterococcus faecalis V583.
The ability of enterococci to adapt and respond to different environmental stimuli, including the host environment, led us to investigate the role of two-component signal transduction in the regulation of Enterococcus faecalis physiology. Using a bioinformatic approach, we previously identified 17 two-component systems (TCS), consisting of a sensory histidine kinase and the cognate response reg...
متن کاملTwo-component signal transduction in Enterococcus faecalis.
Enterococci are gram-positive constituents of the normal human microflora, typically colonizing the intestinal tract and skin (34, 47). However, these organisms are capable of causing disease as opportunistic pathogens, mainly in immunocompromised patients (35, 58). The problem of enterococcal infection has been aggravated by the emergence in the past decade of multiple antibiotic resistance, w...
متن کاملThe Response of Enterococcus faecalis V583 to Chloramphenicol Treatment
Many Enterococcus faecalis strains display tolerance or resistance to many antibiotics, but genes that contribute to the resistance cannot be specified. The multiresistant E. faecalis V583, for which the complete genome sequence is available, survives and grows in media containing relatively high levels of chloramphenicol. No specific genes coding for chloramphenicol resistance has been recogni...
متن کاملTwo-component systems in plant signal transduction.
In plants, two-component systems play important roles in signal transduction in response to environmental stimuli and growth regulators. Genetic and biochemical analyses indicate that sensory hybrid-type histidine kinases, ETR1 and its homologs, function as ethylene receptors and negative regulators in ethylene signaling. Two other hybrid-type histidine kinases, CKI1 and ATHK1, are implicated i...
متن کاملConstruction and characterization of three lactate dehydrogenase-negative Enterococcus faecalis V583 mutants.
The roles of the two ldh genes of Enterococcus faecalis were studied using knockout mutants. Deletion of ldh-1 causes a metabolic shift from homolactic fermentation to ethanol, formate, and acetoin production, with a high level of formate production even under aerobic conditions. Ldh-2 plays only a minor role in lactate production.
