Stationary Battery Thermal Management: Analysis of Active Cooling Designs

Stationary battery systems are becoming more prevalent around the world, with both quantity and capacity of installations growing at same time. Large uninterruptible power supply can generate a significant amount heat during operation; while this is widely understood, current thermal management methods have not kept up increase stationary installations. Active cooling has long been default approach for batteries; however, there no academic research or comparative studies available technology. The present work presents assessment different active through an experimentally validated computational fluid dynamics simulation. Following model validation, several system configurations were analyzed, including effects from implementing either perforated vent plate vortex generators. was observed to greatly performance simultaneously promoting temperature uniformity between batteries. Vortex generators shown marginally performance, yet, future recommended study improvement design. average vented reduced by approximately 5.2 °C, differential among batteries only 2.7 less than recommend value (3 °C) ASHRAE/IEEE Standards.
