Soil CO 2 evolution is driven by forage species, soil moisture, grazing pressure, poultry litter fertilization, and seasonality in silvopastures

چکیده

Carbon cycling is a highly complex yet critical process, especially in silvopastures, which have multiple pools with the ability to store large amounts of C. However, it largely unknown how site-specific variables, including edaphic factors, vegetation type, topography, and management, affect soil CO2 flux silvopastures. Therefore, this study aimed evaluate fluxes silvopastoral system as affected by moisture (udic aquic), forage species (C4; native grass mix orchardgrass [C3; Dactylis glomerata L.]), fertilization (poultry litter control), grazing pressure (grazed ungrazed). Temperature volumetric water content (VWC) were measured simultaneous measurements during summer 2018 2019. Averaged across years, at least 20% greater (P ≤ .05) fertilized poultry than unfertilized or orchardgrass, likely owing increased microbial diversity activity rhizosphere litter-amended species. Across was 7% ungrazed areas lower areas, respectively, compared both grazed areas. dioxide correlated sampling date, temperature, VWC. Study results improve understanding C dynamics silvopasture systems may assist producers their selection nutrient sources when designing for enhanced regional sustainability.

Evaluation and Calibration of a Soil Moisture Sensor for Measuring Poultry Manure or Litter Moisture Content

Moisture content (MC) of poultry manure or litter affects its ammonia (NH 3 ) emissions. Relating MC to ammonia emission of manure or litter is thus of importance to modeling and/or managing ammonia emissions from the manure sources. Development of such relationships would require the knowledge of ammonia emission and the concomitant MC of the manure or litter. This work was carried out to char...

Soil moisture and soil-litter mixing effects on surface litter decomposition: A controlled environment assessment

Recent studies suggest the long-standing discrepancy between measured and modeled leaf litter decomposition in drylands is, in part, the result of a unique combination of abiotic drivers that include high soil surface temperature and radiant energy levels and soil-litter mixing. Temperature and radiant energy effects on litter decomposition have been widely documented. However, under field cond...

Soil compaction and poultry litter effects on factors affecting nitrogen availability in a claypan soil

Soil compaction may affect N mineralization and the subsequent fate of N in agroecosystems. Laboratory incubation and field experiments were conducted to determine the effects of surface soil compaction on soil N mineralization in a claypan soil amended with poultry litter (i.e., Turkey excrement mixed with pine shavings as bedding). In a laboratory study, soil from the surface horizon of a Mex...

The impact of alum addition on organic P transformations in poultry litter and litter-amended soil.

Poultry litter treatment with alum (Al(2)(SO(4))(3) . 18H(2)O) lowers litter phosphorus (P) solubility and therefore can lower litter P release to runoff after land application. Lower P solubility in litter is generally attributed to aluminum-phosphate complex formation. However, recent studies suggest that alum additions to poultry litter may influence organic P mineralization. Therefore, alum...

Soil carbon dioxide efflux from a claypan soil affected by surface compaction and applications of poultry litter

The effects of soil compaction on soil physical properties may alter soil microbial activities and processes, including carbon (C) cycling, and possibly affect agricultural production and environmental degradation. This study investigated the effects of surface soil compaction on soil C mineralization in a claypan soil amended with poultry litter (i.e. turkey excrement mixed with pine shavings ...
