Sleep quality and its clinical associations in trichotillomania and skin picking disorder

Abstract Background Trichotillomania (TTM) is characterized by recurrent hair pulling and associated loss. Skin picking disorder (SPD) skin scarring or tissue damage. Both disorders are also accompanied psychological distress poor sleep. Very little, however, known about lifestyle variables that may contribute to symptom severity in these disorders. Methods We recruited 87 adults as part of a cross-sectional study 3 groups (TTM, SPD, non-affected). Clinical subjects (n=69) were compared with controls (n=18) on sleep quality measured Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). used partial least squares regression identify which significantly among those participants TTM SPD. Results had poorer than controls. was related older age, worse perceived stress, lower tolerance greater impulsivity BFRBs. Poor but not severity. Higher levels comorbid mental sleep, above beyond the impact other variables. Conclsuions appears be multiple Further research needed determine causality tailor treatment specific patient needs.
