Significance of Short‐Wavelength Magnetic Anomaly Low Along the East Pacific Rise Axis, 9°50′N

چکیده

Magnetic anomaly variations near mid-ocean ridge spreading centers are sensitive to a variety of crustal accretionary processes as well geomagnetic field when the crust forms. We collected near-bottom vector magnetic data during series 21 autonomous underwater vehicle Sentry dives 9°50′N on East Pacific Rise (EPR) covering ∼26 km along-axis. These document 2–3 wide axial high that is commonly observed at fast-spreading ridges but also reveal presence superimposed ∼800 m full wavelength low. The low continuous for ≥13 along axis and may extend over entire survey region. A more detailed hydrothermal vents 9°50.3′N reveals ∼100 diameter lows, which misaligned relative active therefore cannot explain magnetization persists in inversions with variable extrusive source thickness, indicating extent layer 2A constitutes sole source, its thickness alone account Lava accumulation models illustrate intensity past ∼2.5 kyr, decreasing ∼900 years, both consistent broad shorter continuity this low, similar features elsewhere EPR suggests, either responsible common among fast-spread ridges, or partially reflect global fluctuations.

Stauromedusan populations inhabiting deep-sea hydrothermal vents along the southern East Pacific Rise

Dense populations of “stalked jellyfish” (Stauromedusae) were encountered at two geographically-separated, deep-sea hydrothermal vent fields located at 7°26’S; and 20°02’S along the East Pacific Rise (EPR). DSV Alvin was utilized (on dives 3320 and 3334) at the sites to collect numerous stauromedusans, which were immediately frozen (at -70°C) or preserved in 70% ethanol upon arrival on board th...

Whole mantle shear structure beneath the East Pacific Rise

[1] We model broadband seismograms containing triplicated S, S, and S along with ScS to produce a pure path one-dimensional model extending from the crust to the core-mantle boundary beneath the East Pacific Rise. We simultaneously model all body wave shapes and amplitudes, thereby eliminating depth-velocity ambiguities. The data consist of western North American broadband recordings of East Pa...

Comparative phylogeography among hydrothermal vent species along the East Pacific Rise reveals vicariant processes and population expansion in the South.

The use of sequence polymorphism from individual mitochondrial genes to infer past demography has recently proved controversial because of the recurrence of selective sweeps acting over genes and the need for unlinked multilocus data sets. However, comparative analyses using several species for one gene and/or multiple genes for one species can serve as a test for potential selective effects an...

Evidence and implications of crustal magmatism on the flanks of the East Pacific Rise

a r t i c l e i n f o Keywords: East Pacific Rise mid-ocean ridge oceanic crust off-axis magmatism waveform modeling Formation of oceanic crust along the East Pacific Rise is thought to be complete within a few kilometers of the rise axis. Here, however, we present evidence for magmatism 20 km from the spreading center in 300-ka-old crust. Seismic data reveal an intrusive complex ~ 2 km beneath...
