Reworked pollen reduces apparent floral change during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum

چکیده
Abstract Plant megafossils from the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) in Bighorn Basin, north-central Wyoming, USA, document a dramatic shift floral composition, whereas palynofloral change same sections has appeared to be more subtle. We investigated this discrepancy by quantifying pollen preservation and measuring stable carbon isotope composition of specific taxa. Pollen grains belonging two common latest Paleocene taxa are poorly preserved PETM samples, their δ13Cpollen is similar during PETM. In contrast, thermophilic taxon that became abundant pristine, specimens ∼4‰ lower than specimens. More broadly, lineages currently centered temperate climates when found now tropics well preserved. These differences isotopic indicate extensive redeposition older Increased abundance Cretaceous palynotaxa samples confirms erosion redeposition, likely resulting episodic intense precipitation. Exclusion reworked analyses reveals that, as megaflora, were absent at time dry tropical briefly appeared. Major climate changes like may commonly destabilize landscapes, increase reworking, thus smooth patterns microfloras, leading underestimates rate magnitude response past global change.

Sharply increased insect herbivory during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum.
The Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM, 55.8 Ma), an abrupt global warming event linked to a transient increase in pCO2, was comparable in rate and magnitude to modern anthropogenic climate change. Here we use plant fossils from the Bighorn Basin of Wyoming to document the combined effects of temperature and pCO2 on insect herbivory. We examined 5,062 fossil leaves from five sites positione...
متن کاملFloral change during the Initial Eocene Thermal Maximum in the Powder River Basin, Wyoming
Rapid warming at the beginning of the Eocene (the Initial Eocene Thermal Maximum, or IETM) has been associated with modest changes in floral composition, mostly shifts in the relative abundances of taxa rather than large numbers of first or last appearances. Although floral change across the Paleocene-Eocene transition has been studied in many areas, few fossils demonstrably come from the ∼200 ...

Body size plays a critical role in mammalian ecology and physiology. Previous research has shown that many mammals became smaller during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), but the timing and magnitude of that change relative to climate change have been unclear. A high-resolution record of continental climate and equid body size change shows a directional size decrease of ~30% over the...
متن کاملExtreme warmth and heat-stressed plankton in the tropics during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum
Global ocean temperatures rapidly warmed by ~5°C during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM; ~56 million years ago). Extratropical sea surface temperatures (SSTs) met or exceeded modern subtropical values. With these warm extratropical temperatures, climate models predict tropical SSTs >35°C-near upper physiological temperature limits for many organisms. However, few data are available t...
متن کاملRapid acidification of the ocean during the Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum.
The Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum (PETM) has been attributed to the rapid release of approximately 2000 x 10(9) metric tons of carbon in the form of methane. In theory, oxidation and ocean absorption of this carbon should have lowered deep-sea pH, thereby triggering a rapid (<10,000-year) shoaling of the calcite compensation depth (CCD), followed by gradual recovery. Here we present geochemi...
