Regional innovation and the retention of foreign direct investment: a place-based approach

The relationship between regional innovation and foreign direct investment (FDI) has been extensively examined, but the impact of on FDI retention received scant attention. Drawing logic place-based approaches, paper investigates this by conducting survival analyses data collected across 31 provinces China. We find that technician supply (RTS) intellectual property flexibility (RIPF) help regions retain ventures. However, RTS is less likely to investments multinational enterprises with large research development expenditure, while RIPF more them. Theoretical policy implications are discussed.
