Redundancy analysis reveals complex den use patterns by eastern spotted skunks, a conditional specialist

چکیده

Wildlife managers tasked with understanding habitat and resource selection at the population level attempt to characterize patterns in nature that aid inform conservation. Resource functions (RSFs), such as discrete choice analyses, are standard convention effects of attributes on patterns. These tools invaluable for wildlife management conservation have proven successful numerous studies. However, analysis small datasets using RSF becomes problematic when attempting account complex sources variation, inclusion factors weather or intrinsic variation target species' response may produce models poor predictive ability. We compared application generalized linear mixed-effects modeling (GLMM) redundancy (RDA) Appalachian spotted skunk (Spilogale putorius putorius) den data four study sites within George Washington, Jefferson, Monongahela National Forests, surrounding private lands Mountains western Virginia northeastern West Virginia. assessed need alternative (i.e., conditions individual variation) addition better identify selection. The RDA elucidated opposing relationships, whereby type use was based reproductive status condition, which were not evident GLMM model relied solely measures. Our results demonstrated importance examining multivariate techniques conventional analyses understand intricate habitat–species especially datasets. Furthermore, from our we proposed skunks neither a true generalist nor specialist species. introduced define term “conditional specialist” represent species is conditionally selective given one more current environmental conditions.

Summer Resting and Den Site Selection by Eastern Spotted Skunks (spilogale Putorius) in Arkansas

Denning and resting site use by radiocollared eastern spotted skunks (Spilogale putorius) in the Ouachita Mountains of western Arkansas was investigated from May through August 2005 and 2006. We identified and characterized microhabitat and landscape characteristics of 127 resting and den sites. Sites were located in burrows excavated by other mammal species (48%), in decayed or burned root sys...

Habitat Selection and Home Range Dynamics of Eastern Spotted Skunks in the Ouachita Mountains, Arkansas, USA

Since the 1940s, eastern spotted skunks (Spilogale putorius) have declined dramatically throughout the Midwest. One hypothesis for the decline is the loss of suitable habitat, although little is known about the ecological requirements of this species. To elucidate seasonal home range and habitat selection by eastern spotted skunks, we conducted telemetry-based field work in the Ouachita Mountai...

Landscape Ecology of Eastern Spotted Skunks in Habitats Restored for RedCockaded Woodpeckers

Although examples are rare, conflicts between species of conservation concern can result from habitat restoration that modifies habitat to benefit a single taxon. A forest restoration program designed to enhance habitat for endangered red-cockaded woodpeckers (Picoides borealis) may be reducing available habitat for the eastern spotted skunk (Spilogale putorius), a forest-adapted sympatric spec...

Landscape Use and Co-Occurrence Patterns of Neotropical Spotted Cats

Small felids influence ecosystem dynamics through prey and plant population changes. Although most of these species are threatened, they are accorded one of the lowest research efforts of all felids, and we lack basic information about them. Many felids occur in sympatry, where intraguild competition is frequent. Therefore, assessing the role of interspecific interactions along with the relativ...
