چکیده

We investigate the possibility of determining mass distribution a gravitational lens via lensing observations. consider an extended, compact lens, representing its static external potential infinite set symmetric trace free (STF) multipole moments. Within wave-optical treatment, we evaluate caustics formed in lens's point spread function (PSF). study only quantity that is available astronomical observations: image PSF by imaging telescope. This observable may be used to recover some physical characteristics including shape, orientation and composition. Illustrating this, exotic lenses several well-known solids with uniform density. show when moments beyond quadrupole are observed, symmetry properties can recovered. The presence octupole moment implies breaking "north-south" lens. rotated hexadecapole axial symmetry. As such, if observations lensed images allow reconstruction these moments, important information about dynamics obtained. help choosing most appropriate profile characterize astrophysical lenses, such as dark matter halos presumed contain galaxies clusters galaxies. Our results novel offer new insight into realistic systems.

Investigation of Gravitational Lens Mass Models

We have previously reported the discovery of strong gravitational lensing by faint elliptical galaxies using the WFPC2 on HST and here we investigate their potential usefulness in putting constraints on lens mass models. We compare various ellipsoidal surface mass distributions, including those with and without a core radius, as well as models in which the mass distributions are assumed to have...

Gravitational Lens Magnification and the Mass of Abell

We present the first application of lens magnification to measure the absolute mass of a galaxy cluster; Abell 1689. The absolute mass of a galaxy cluster can be measured by the gravitational lens magnification of a background galaxy population by the cluster gravitational potential. The lensing signal is complicated by the intrinsic variation in number counts due to galaxy clustering and shot–...

Extended Source Diffraction Effects Near Gravitational Lens Fold Caustics

Calculations are presented detailing the gravitational lens diffraction due to the steep brightness gradient of the limb of a stellar source. The lensing case studied is the fold caustic crossing. The limb diffraction signal greatly exceeds that due to the disk as a whole and should be detectable for white dwarf sources in our Galaxy and its satellites with existing telescopes. Detection of thi...

Statistics of Gravitational Microlensing Magnification. I. Two-dimensional Lens Distribution

The propagation of light of distant sources through a distribution of clumpy matter, acting as point mass lenses, produces multiple images that contribute to the total brightness of the observed macroimages. In this paper we refine the theory of gravitational microlensing for a planar distribution of point masses. In the second accompanying paper, we extend the analysis to a three-dimensional l...

Universality of the subsolar mass distribution from critical gravitational collapse

Self-similarity induced by critical gravitational collapse is used as a paradigm to probe the mass distribution of subsolar objects. At large mass (solar mass and above) there is widespread agreement as to both the form and parameter values arising in the mass distribution of stellar objects. At subsolar mass there is still considerable disagreement as to the qualitative form of the mass distri...
