Radioactive decays of stored highly charged ions

چکیده

Abstract Decay properties known in neutral atoms can be altered significantly if all or most bound electrons are removed. Straightforwardly, fully-ionised nuclei, the decay channels involving simply disabled. Also modes, that hindered completely blocked atoms, may, respectively, become dominant open up highly charged ions. Few-electron ions by themselves clean systems with well-defined quantum numbers, which interactions within remaining either excluded treated precisely, thereby allowing for investigations of influence atomic shell on nuclear properties. Violent stellar environments characterised high temperatures and densities lead to ionisation degrees nuclides involved nucleosynthesis processes. In spite rich motivation studying radioactive decays ions, intensive measurements became possible only after heavy-ion storage rings coupled radioactive-ion beam facilities available. Presented here is a compact review relevant experimental techniques experiments.

Radiobiological Effects of Highly Charged Ions

The radiobiological effects of highly-charged-ion beams are of interest for tumortherapy and for radioprotection in space. In tumor therapy, high-energy protons and carbon ions exhibit an inverse dose profile, i.e. an increase of energy deposition with penetration depth. This allows a greater tumor dose for protons and carbon ions than for photons. In addition, for the heavier carbon ions, this...

Parity Violation effects in highly-charged ions

Parity-nonconserving (PNC) atomic effects originate from the electroweak interaction of atomic electrons with the nucleus via Z-boson exchange. Comparing experimental results with theoretical predictions of the standard model allows to search for ”new physics” beyond the standard model (e.g., a second Z-boson or new fermions) [1]. In the case of neutral atoms here is the discrepancy between the...

Atomic Parity-Violation in Highly-Charged Ions

The investigation of parity-violation (PV) in forbidden atomic transitions is an active and fundamental research area, especially for its implications on the physics beyond the Standard Model [1]. Atomic transitions may be employed to study PV effects originating from weak neutral currents, i.e. due to the exchange of a Z boson between a nucleon of the nucleus and a bound electron. Experiments ...
