Pedestrian Crossings as a Means of Reducing Conflicts between Cyclists and Pedestrians in Shared Spaces

One significant and simultaneously interesting problem in urban mobility has to do with the study of shared spaces where various categories users coexist act together. This paper aims examine behavior preferences pedestrians cyclists, who both a space infrastructure along seafront (which length around 4.0 km) city Thessaloniki, Greece. Furthermore, problems caused by coexistence, such as at locations there are pedestrian crossings on bicycle lane, recorded evaluated. Traffic calming measures aimed improving existing situation terms safety comfort for cyclists also explored. Data were collected through web-based questionnaire survey, which was distributed via email students employees Aristotle University Thessaloniki. A total 1194 questionnaires framework survey during year 2021, including responses from cyclists. The analyzed use descriptive inferential statistics; latter method suggested several differences how each group (pedestrians or cyclists) perceived their compared other. Latent variable path models estimated investigate attitude towards crossings, examined function perception other group; about benefits infrastructure; preference additional interventions; overall opinion quality area. results suggest that forms aggressive behavior, using affected aforementioned factors. this can inform decision takers makers area land regarding policy recommendations facilitating interactions between spaces.
