Peak oil and the low-carbon energy transition: A net-energy perspective

نویسندگان

چکیده

Since the Pennsylvania oil rush of 1859, petroleum has quickly become dominant fuel industrial society. The “Peak Oil” debate focused on whether or not there was an impending production crunch cheap oil, and whilst have been no shortages across globe, a shift from conventional to unconventional liquids occurred. One aspect this fully explored in previous discussions–although some importance low-carbon energy transition context: extent which net-energy supply products is affected by use lower quality sources. To fill gap, paper incorporates standard EROI (energy-return-on-investment) estimates dynamic decline functions GlobalShift all-liquids bottom-up model global scale. We determine necessary for (including direct indirect costs) represent today 15.5% liquids, growing at exponential rate: 2050, proportion equivalent half gross output will be engulfed its own production. Our findings thus question feasibility fast transition. therefore suggest urgent return peak debate, but including issues avoiding narrow focus ‘peak supply’ vs demand’.

The UK low carbon energy transition: prospects and challenges

Under the 2008 Climate Change Act, the UK has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050. This implies a radical transformation of systems for meeting energy service demands in particular, a transition to a low carbon system of electricity generation and supply. Despite efforts by the UK Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) to examine pathways to 2050, most of ...

Energy 2050: Making the Transition to a Secure Low-Carbon Energy System

This book gathers contributions from members of the UK Energy Research Centre, in the context of a collaborative research project. It addresses the challenge of determining how the United Kingdom might meet its objective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80 per cent by 2050. This target was included in the UK’s 2008 Climate Change Act. Yet, significant changes are required in the UK energ...
