Optimizing bus line platform assignment across bus stations in Utrecht

Abstract Due to its increased popularity, public transport has grown considerably, which resulted in more lines that are operated with higher frequencies. As a result, the current bus stations located strategic places like city centers serve as hub becoming too small. If there is no space enlarge station, then usually best option create second station close-by. This raises problem of distributing over stations, such good connections offered transfer passengers. We have considered this Utrecht, middle-sized center Netherlands. The central transit hub, next railway consists several separate stations. goal research minimize total travel time for all passengers who want at hub. Here we not allowed adjust timetable, and take capacity vehicle limitations into account. To find out journeys made daily by how many people use data from digital fare system. results passenger groups, each group compute relevant options given timetable. Thereto, routes split an inbound itinerary, within same outbound itinerary; validity depends on assignment decompose first finding distribution assigning them platform choice. In subproblem, set transfers using Integer Linear Programming (ILP), resulting assignment. distribute platforms. can be multiple assigned single platform, long never vehicles simultaneously than physically fit. maximize comfort tight adjacent platforms; solved ILP well.
