چکیده
This study examined whether the number of shared topic-vehicle significant features affects speakers’ preference for use metaphorical rather than literal expressions. Across five experiments, participants were asked to choose one expression that best paraphrased a given sentence from list options. The results Experiments 1 and 5 showed participants’ choice increased with greater numbers in sentence. In 2 4, we found effect unshared was smaller features. Experiment 3 replicated findings when metaphors replaced similes. Our suggest topic-attributed support fundamental tenets inexpressibility hypothesis context metaphor form preference.

Why discourse affects speakers' choice of referring expressions
We propose a language production model that uses dynamic discourse information to account for speakers’ choices of referring expressions. Our model extends previous rational speech act models (Frank and Goodman, 2012) to more naturally distributed linguistic data, instead of assuming a controlled experimental setting. Simulations show a close match between speakers’ utterances and model predict...
متن کاملEvaluation Metrics for Automatically Generated Metaphorical Expressions
This paper proposesmetrics to evaluate the quality of automatically generatedmetaphors not restricted to similes. The metrics are metaphoricity, novelty, comprehensibility, and overall evaluation. First, we discuss their importance and necessity. Next, we show that it is feasible to evaluate them by crowdsourcing. The targets of the evaluation are 1,360 expressions, each of which consists of a ...
متن کاملMETAPHORICAL INDICES: Presenting context in discourse through metaphorical expressions
The purpose of this article is to present a study of metaphorical expressions in the Swedish forest-discourse, and thereby, to demonstrate a special function of metaphorical constructions in discourse, that is, to indicate contexts relevant to ongoing discourse. Traditionally, theorizing about metaphorical expressions has lacked considerations of discourse processes and temporary contexts, and,...
متن کاملShared Components Topic Models with Application to Selectional Preference
Introduction Predicate argument selectional preference1 is the notion that the roles, or argument positions, of a given predicate tend to prefer some arguments to others. Automatically inferring these preferences has been a topic of interest within the computational linguistics community since the early 1990’s, with Resnik [3] giving examples such as: Mary drank some {wine, gasoline, pencils, s...
متن کاملShared Features Dominate The Number-Of-Features Effect
When asked to list semantic features for concrete concepts, participants list many features for some concepts and few for others. Concepts with many semantic features have been reported to be processed faster in lexical decision, naming, and semantic decision tasks (Pexman, Holyk, & Monfils, 2003; Pexman, Lupker, & Hino, 2002). Using a much larger and better controlled set of items in Experimen...
