New Material of Karakoromys (Ctenodactylidae, Rodentia) from Late Eocene-Early Oligocene of Ulantatal (Nei Mongol): Taxonomy, Diversity, and Response to Climatic Change

چکیده

The Eocene-Oligocene Transition (EOT) was one of the most profound climate changes in Cenozoic era, characterized by global cooling around 34 million years ago. This time period also witnessed major faunal turnovers, such as “Mongolian Remodeling” Asia, dominance rodents and lagomorphs after EOT. Previous studies have primarily focused on overall change across Here, we examined genus, earliest ctenodactylid Karakoromys, based rich fossils from continuous sections at Ulantatal, Nei Mongol, magnetostragraphically dated to latest Eocene-Early Oligocene. Based a systematic paleontological study these fossils, recognized four species Karakoromys (Karakoromys decussus, K. arcanus, chelkaris, conjunctus sp. nov.), indicating relatively high diversity primitive ctenodactylids during Oligocene (~34.9–30.8 Ma). turnover occurred regional aridification event 31 Ma rather than EOT event, suggesting that precipitation variation semi-arid area may played more important role temperature evolution early ctenodactylids.

New Cricetid Rodents from Strata near the Eocene-Oligocene Boundary in Erden Obo Section (Nei Mongol, China)

New cricetids (Eucricetodon wangae sp. nov., Eucricetodon sp. and Pappocricetodon siziwangqiensis sp. nov.) are reported from the lower and middle parts of the "Upper Red" beds of the Erden Obo section in Nei Mongol, China. Eucricetodon wangae is more primitive than other known species of the genus from lower Oligocene of Asia and Europe in having a single anterocone on M1, a single connection ...

Heterogeneity in global vegetation and terrestrial climate change during the late Eocene to early Oligocene transition

Rapid global cooling at the Eocene - Oligocene Transition (EOT), ~33.9-33.5 Ma, is widely considered to mark the onset of the modern icehouse world. A large and rapid drop in atmospheric pCO2 has been proposed as the driving force behind extinctions in the marine realm and glaciation on Antarctica. However, the global terrestrial response to this cooling is uncertain. Here we present the first ...
