Negotiating (with) Fire: Contemporary Fire Domestication in Swedish Sápmi

چکیده
In Sweden, fire management is driven by nature conservation objectives through both regeneration burning, used as a soil preparation method in forestry, and burning protected forests, aiming to reintroduce an ecological process necessary for the preservation of biodiversity. The strategy affects Indigenous Sami reindeer herders who use commercial forestlands pastures their reindeer. Fire can have ambivalent effects on pasture depending where it occurs. Yet, are currently not included planning but consultation forest owners occurring late process. this article, we interpret system domestication, understood continuous interactions between humans fire. To describe modalities contemporary our study draws semi-structured interviews carried out with herders, forestry planners, managers, practitioners different localities northernmost counties Västerbotten Norrbotten. We show how domestication involves dual negotiation process: during process, about managers. Burning conceive agent rather than tool, able produce unique forests increase naturalness, which they must steer order reach desired results. Through fire, stimulates new constitutes possible common ground from forms collaboration could emerge. Our reaffirms hybrid natural cultural, resulting negotiations human actors system.

Fight fire with fire
Since our hunter–gatherer ancestors began to develop agriculture more than 10,000 years ago, farmers have been battling with Nature to protect their cultivated plants against pests and diseases. Organisms from all kingdoms of life—from mammals and insects to bacteria, fungi and viruses—are attracted by the easy pickings that large fields of plants represent, and farmers have sought to contain t...
متن کاملDoS: Fighting Fire with Fire
We consider DoS attacks on servers in which attackers’ requests are indistinguishable from legitimate requests. Most current defenses against this class of attack rely on legitimate users in aggregate having more of some resource (CPU cycles, memory cycles, human attention, etc.) than attackers. A server so defended asks prospective clients to prove their legitimacy by spending some of this res...

I the two volumes of The Civilizing Process (first published in German in 1939, and in English in 1982) Norbert Elias studied changes in manners, society, and personality in western Europe over the period roughly from 850 to 1850. The documentary evidence upon which he based his argument was mainly derived from the second half of this period, from 1350 to 1850. The purpose of the study was to a...
متن کاملEradication of poliovirus: fighting fire with fire.
Endemic wild polioviruses have been eliminated from most of the world, and the number of human paralytic cases has been reduced by .99%, from an estimated annual incidence of .500,000 cases to ,2000 cases [1–3]. Circulating wild polioviruses remain endemic in only 2 major locations, Nigeria and a zone extending from northern India west to Pakistan and Afghanistan [1–3]. Furthermore, wild-type 2...
متن کاملFire Effects on Historical Wildfire Refugia in Contemporary Wildfires
Wildfire refugia are forest patches that are minimally-impacted by fire and provide critical habitats for fire-sensitive species and seed sources for post-fire forest regeneration. Wildfire refugia are relatively understudied, particularly concerning the impacts of subsequent fires on existing refugia. We opportunistically re-visited 122 sites classified in 1994 for a prior fire refugia study, ...
