Multi-product firms and increasing marginal costs

چکیده
Recent literature has addressed how product creation amplifies economic fluctuations via the love of variety. Yet, empirical evidence on variety effects is sparse. The current paper demonstrates that decreasing returns in variety-level production technology, which leads to increasing marginal costs, similarly amplify business cycles. Product scope expansions reduce costs and firms have an incentive produce multiple products even if are entirely absent. efficiency gains from adjusting scopes makes economy more susceptible sunspot equilibria. indeterminate model estimated Bayesian methods data favors multi-product structure with animal spirits explaining a significant fraction U.S.

Multi-Product Firms and Trade Liberalization∗
This paper develops a general equilibrium model of international trade that features selection across firms, products and countries. Firms’export decisions depend on a combination of firm “productivity” and firm-product-country “consumer tastes”, both of which are stochastic and unknown prior to the payment of a sunk cost of entry. Trade liberalization induces endogenous reallocations of resour...
متن کامل24. Pricing in Bertrand competition with increasing marginal costs
Bertrand competition under decreasing returns involves a wide interval of pure strategy Nash equilibrium prices. We first present results of experiments in which two, three and four identical firms repeatedly interact in this environment. More firms lead to lower average prices. However, prices remain substantially above the Walrasian level. With more than two firms the predominant market price...
متن کاملPricing with markups in industries with increasing marginal costs
We study a game that models a market in which heterogeneous producers of perfect substitutes make pricing decisions in a first stage, followed by consumers that select a producer that sells at lowest price. As opposed to Cournot or Bertrand competition, producers select prices using a supply function that maps prices to production levels. Solutions of this type of models are normally referred t...

There is...
متن کاملRisk and firms’ costs
This study examines the economic rationale for limiting firms’ risk. We argue that risk increases the cost of doing business for two reasons. First, risk causes operating inefficiencies and imposes adjustment costs. Second, diverse stakeholders must be compensated for their risk-bearing. We find empirical support for positive risk-cost relations using various model specifications and risk measu...
