Midwifery Now: Narratives about Motivations for Career Choice

The objective of this study was to analyse nursing students’ motivation choose the midwifery career. This is a cross-sectional with qualitatively driven mixed-methods approach. settings are three higher education institutions located in Portugal. conducted between September 2019 and November 2021, participation 74 master’s students, through convenience sampling. data were collected LimeSurvey software subsequently analysed SPSS IRaMuTeQ programs. emerging thematic areas as follows: (1) building professional identity (2) knowledge construction. From these two areas, six classes emerged that revealed commitment profession. It Class 6 ancestral essence profession lies, revealing meanings competence care perpetuation linked gender. Midwifery first-line profession, career choice reflects support mother/newborn dyad view inevitability human for preservation species. Midwives Socratic inspiration model Given development identity, it can be interesting have an educational curriculum where values reinforced. A woman-centred birth environment territory elementary education.
