Microstructure and mechanical properties of cold sintered porous alumina ceramics

New innovative approach to fabricate porous alumina ceramics by cold sintering process (CSP) is presented using NaCl as pore forming agent. The effects of CSP and post-annealing temperature on the microstructure mechanical strength were investigated. Al2O3–NaCl composite with bulk density 2.92 g/cm3 was compacted firstly then a structure formed at 1200°C–1500°C for 30 min. Brazilian test method Vickers hardness used determine indirect tensile alumina, respectively. Meanwhile, phases respectively examined X-ray diffractometer scanning electron microscope (SEM) complemented 3D image analysis tomography (XRT). SEM structural XRT sintered showed dense precipitated between Al2O3 particles. volatization from observed during annealing complete formed. porosity decreased 48 vol% 28 increased 1200 °C 1500 °C, while 14.3 115.4 HV 18.29–132.82 MPa BET also complex micropores, mesopores macropores broad size distribution.
