Mental fatigue induced by prolonged motor imagery increases perception of effort and the activity of motor areas

چکیده
Recent literature suggests that when prolonged, motor imagery (MI) induces mental fatigue and negatively impacts subsequent physical exercise. The aim of this study was to confirm possibility with neurophysiological self-reported measures. Thirteen participants performed 200 imagined isometric knee extension contractions (Prolonged MI condition) or watched a documentary (Control condition), then 150 actual extensions. Electroencephalography continuously recorded obtain motor-related cortical potential amplitude at Cz electrode (MRCP, index area activity) for each contraction. Electromyography the vastus lateralis muscle as well perceived effort required perform prolonged MI, watch documentary, were measured. During level, imagine MRCP increased over time. increase in significantly correlated amplitude. exercise, significant condition × time interaction revealed greater compared control condition, specific alteration EMG RMS muscle. These alterations observed presence during contractions, combined those suggest may impair command contractions. While effect on clear future studies should tailor exercise minimize exercise-induced decrease force production capacity its confounding effects fatigue.

Fatigue Induced by Physical and Mental Exertion Increases Perception of Effort and Impairs Subsequent Endurance Performance
Endurance performance involves the prolonged maintenance of constant or self-regulated power/velocity or torque/force. While the impact of numerous determinants of endurance performance has been previously reviewed, the impact of fatigue on subsequent endurance performance still needs to be documented. This review aims to present the impact of fatigue induced by physical or mental exertion on s...
متن کاملMotor imagery of hand actions: Decoding the content of motor imagery from brain activity in frontal and parietal motor areas
How motor maps are organized while imagining actions is an intensely debated issue. It is particularly unclear whether motor imagery relies on action-specific representations in premotor and posterior parietal cortices. This study tackled this issue by attempting to decode the content of motor imagery from spatial patterns of Blood Oxygen Level Dependent (BOLD) signals recorded in the frontopar...
متن کاملClassification of EEG-based motor imagery BCI by using ECOC
AbstractAccuracy in identifying the subjects’ intentions for moving their different limbs from EEG signals is regarded as an important factor in the studies related to BCI. In fact, the complexity of motor-imagination and low amount of signal-to-noise ratio for EEG signal makes this identification as a difficult task. In order to overcome these complexities, many techniques such as variou...
متن کاملMotor imagery: perception or action?
Motor imagery has been studied using subjective, behavioural and physiological methods and this paper reviews theoretical and practical issues from all three viewpoints. Attempts to measure motor imagery on a subjective scale have met with limited success but alternative methods are proposed. Research on mental practice suggests a number of different processes may be needed to explain the varie...
