چکیده

The Late Pleistocene is a crucial period of dramatic changes in lithic technologies as well interactions between modern humans and other archaic human groups. In this paper, we describe the technological analysis assemblages collected from 28 newly discovered Paleolithic sites along Daoshui River, tributary Lishui River (itself Yangtze River) northern Hunan Province, central South China. Luminescence dating several region has provided general age range for assemblages. Technologically, high quality raw materials are predominantly exploited (e.g., chert siliceous slate) direct hard hammer percussion predominates which lacks classic Levallois technology though conceptually, some specimens do exhibit certain degree volumetric control share common features with prepared cores, here tentatively define them “simply cores.” Small flakes flake tool production plays primary role overall strategy, accompanying small proportion large Large Cutting Tools production. Our examination clearly contrasts traditional view China being characterized by simple cobble industry over course period. We further discuss issue Middle China, ecological adaptations hominins valley within climatic context.

The lithic assemblages of Donggutuo, Nihewan basin: Knapping skills of early pleistocene hominins in North China

Donggutuo (DGT) is one of the richest archaeological localities in the Nihewan Basin of North China, thereby providing key information about the technological behaviours of early hominins in eastern Asia. Although DGT has been subject of multiple excavations and technological studies over the past several decades, few detailed studies on the lithic assemblages have been published. Here we summa...

Lithic technological responses to Late Pleistocene glacial cycling at Pinnacle Point Site 5-6, South Africa

There are multiple hypotheses for human responses to glacial cycling in the Late Pleistocene, including changes in population size, interconnectedness, and mobility. Lithic technological analysis informs us of human responses to environmental change because lithic assemblage characteristics are a reflection of raw material transport, reduction, and discard behaviors that depend on hunter-gather...

Characterizing the Late Pleistocene MSA Lithic Technology of Sibudu, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Studies of the African Middle Stone Age (MSA) have become central for defining the cultural adaptations that accompanied the evolution of modern humans. While much of recent research in South Africa has focused on the Still Bay and Howiesons Poort (HP), periods following these technocomplexes were often neglected. Here we examine lithic assemblages from Sibudu that post-date the HP to further t...
