چکیده
Abstract Several previous studies have reported geographic variation and/or latitudinal clines of morphological sexual characteristics, but there are few that consider reproductive traits not morphological. Here, we measured the proportion females fertilized by males, frequency failure in and number female copulations red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum collected from fields Japan to investigate relationship between latitude. Our results show substantial differences both sexes among field populations. We identified for females. Moreover, female, male, were correlated with body size. study suggests selection male varies latitude T. . Significance statement It has been established gradients frequently observed numerous animal species, which size is a prime example. Analogously, documented several indicating may be influenced latitude, although specific understanding thereof remains elusive. In this study, quantified analyzed their findings indicate mating efficacy was superior at lower than higher latitudes, no discernible gradient frequency. These imply selective pressure on males species stronger latitudes.

Doublesex target genes in the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum
Sex determination cascade in insects terminates with the production of sex-specific protein, Doublesex (Dsx). We identified the dsx homolog (Tcdsx) in Tribolium castaneum. The pre-mRNA of Tcdsx is sex-specifically spliced into three female (Tcdsxf1, Tcdsxf2 and Tcdsxf3) and one male-specific (Tcdsxm) isoforms. Cis-regulatory elements potentially involved in sex-specific splicing of the Tcdsx pr...
متن کاملLarval RNA Interference in the Red Flour Beetle, Tribolium castaneum
The red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum, offers a repertoire of experimental tools for genetic and developmental studies, including a fully annotated genome sequence, transposon-based transgenesis, and effective RNA interference (RNAi). Among these advantages, RNAi-based gene knockdown techniques are at the core of Tribolium research. T. castaneum show a robust systemic RNAi response, making ...
متن کاملEffects of gamma radiation on the reproductive organs in the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum (Herbst)
Gamma radiation effects on the gonads of Tribolium castaneum were assessed by cytological techniques. Pupal treatments of 15 Gy resulted in the significant reduction of testes and ovaries leading to sterility in males and infecundity in females, respectively. The present findings thus provide an important information for designing a sterile male technique for this storage pest species.
متن کاملFemale polyandry affects their sons' reproductive success in the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum.
A potential benefit to females mating with multiple males is the increased probability that their sons will inherit traits enhancing their pre- or post-mating ability to obtain fertilizations. We allowed red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum) females to mate on three consecutive days either repeatedly to the same male or to three different males. This procedure was carried out in 20 replicate l...
متن کاملDigestive proteolysis organization in two closely related Tenebrionid beetles: red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum) and confused flour beetle (Tribolium confusum).
The spectra of Tribolium castaneum and T. confusum larval digestive peptidases were characterized with respect to the spatial organization of protein digestion in the midgut. The pH of midgut contents in both species increased from 5.6-6.0 in the anterior to 7.0-7.5 in the posterior midgut. However, the pH optimum of the total proteolytic activity of the gut extract from either insect was pH 4....
