This paper presents research into an initiative that promotes extracurricular sport and physical activity opportunities for young people in Welsh secondary schools. The purpose of the was to develop a nuanced understanding people's participation, non-participation its connection their leisure lifestyles. An accumulated twelve month period ethnographic case study undertaken. exploratory 18-week spent six schools led phase two, further eight week at two original visited. adopted person-centred approach used observations, focus groups, interviews classroom activities data collection. findings highlighted importance locating as part success appeared closely linked three principal factors: perceived image; type range offered; ability development officer connect people. explanatory framework is proposed means making sense identifying implications policy makers interested introducing managing similar initiatives.
