Japanese international student-athletes’ adjustment experience at the National Collegiate Athletic Association

Currently, the number of International-Student Athletes (ISAs) in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is increasing over time and Japan biggest market for recruiting Asia. Whereas international students are playing an increasingly important role NCAA, several studies have reported that ISAs face challenges adjusting to their dual identities as athletes at universities US. Furthermore, it has been cleared Asian studying US some because cultural linguistic differences. However, remains unclear whether difficulties experienced by Japanese same or different adjustment-related other students. The purpose this study clarify from United States’ universities. Situating ISA adjustment model using a unique case design, 13 NCAA Division I were interviewed, data coded continuous comparative analysis method. results revealed who participated faced academic, social, athletic, personal-emotional, institutional challenges. Particularly, differed countries points; differences, differences communication styles, systemic academia athletics between For promoting ISAs, suggests; gaining experience getting information understand familiarize with building relationships culturally diverse people various cultures, encouraging coaches specific ISAs.
