Hyposplenism in gastrointestinal disease.
The hazards of living without a spleen were recognised by the paediatricians in the early 1960's when they focussed attention on the syndrome of fulminant sepsis, often due to pneumococcal infection, occurring in young children within the fIrst two years of splenectomy 1. A child, well at breakfast, might be febrile by lunch, comatose by evening and dead by the following morning. We now recogni...
متن کاملClinical picture Grave’s disease and acquired hyposplenism
A 38-year-old Caucasian woman was referred to the hematology clinic for unexplained leukocytosis and thrombocytosis and ‘possible myeloproliferative disorder’. Her history included only Grave’s disease (GD) in remission for 2 years after methimazole treatment. A recent blood count revealed hemoglobin content to be 12.8 g/dl; white blood cells 20.7 10 m/l (neutrophils 9.5 10; lymphocytes 8.3 10;...
متن کاملPlatelet hyperactivity in sickle-cell disease: a consequence of hyposplenism.
Platelet function was measured on 29 occasions in 16 adult patients in the asymptomatic steady state of sickle-cell anaemia. There was a significant increase in platelet number and micro-aggregate formation, and a lower aggregation threshold with adenosine diphosphate, compared with 23 healthy controls. Similar changes were found, however, in 12 splenectomised patients without sickle-cell disea...
متن کاملSerum Interleukin-17 Evaluation in Patients With Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disease
Background: Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders or diseases (EGIDs) may result from an abnormal immune-mediated response to food antigens. Activated eosinophils release various mediators with inflammatory properties which may result in tissue and subsequently organ damage. The cytokine milieu of these patients has revealed increased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, inc...
متن کاملImpaired immunity in patients with inflammatory bowel disease and hyposplenism: the response to intravenous phi X174.
Eight patients with inflammatory bowel disease were tested for their ability to mount a serological response to the intravenous particulate antigen phi X174. Seven patients had extensive ulcerative colitis and one patient extensive Crohn's colitis, four having severe hyposplenism and four normal splenic function. The antibody response to phi X174 was grossly impaired in those with hyposplenism.
