How Generations Think: Research on Generation Z

The relationship between current generations and the ones that grow up has always been ambivalent . There are a lot of motivations behind the criticism such as threats, envy or simply pride in the fantastic achievements of a generation, but lack of knowledge might be an explanation as well. Low birth rates in developed societies reflect women's difficulties in combining work and motherhood. While demographic research has focused on the role of formal childcare in easing this dilemma, evolutionary theory points to the importance of kin. The cooperative breeding hypothesis states that the wider kin group has facilitated women's reproduction during our evolutionary history. This mech...

How to Protect Future Generations Using Tax-Base Restrictions

This paper studies how to protect future generations from expropriation and to induce optimal investment in intergenerational public goods (IPGs), by introducing constitutional restrictions on the tax base. The type of tax-base restrictions that we consider places limits on the tax instruments that the government can use to raise revenue, but not on the level of expenditures or debt. We show th...

How lifetimes shape epigenotype within and across generations.

Despite our detailed characterization of the human genome at the level of the primary DNA sequence, we are still far from understanding the molecular events underlying phenotypic variation. Epigenetic modifications to the DNA sequence and associated chromatin are known to regulate gene expression and, as such, are a significant contributor to phenotype. Studies of inbred mice and monozygotic tw...
