Hitchhiking Exotic Clam: Dreissena polymorpha (Pallas, 1771) Transported via the Ornamental Plant Trade

چکیده

Ornamental aquaculture is one of the main sources non-native species worldwide. Unintentionally transported “hitchhiking” organisms have been previously recorded; although most these are from tropical regions, here we report on first accidental transport zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) in a shipment ornamental Aegagropila linnaei (Chlorophyta) Russia to Czech Republic. This invasive listed national blacklist alien Republic and can be easily released outdoor garden ponds together with A. linnaei. Since known gateway for aquatic European perspective, re-export other countries also possible. Thus, spread D. polymorpha via this pathway cannot excluded. finding should importance conservationists, traders, decision-makers stakeholders.

Pseudodiarrhoea in zebra mussels Dreissena polymorpha (Pallas) exposed to microcystins.

Microcystins are produced by bloom-forming cyanobacteria and pose significant health and ecological problems. In this study we show that zebra mussels respond differently to different strains of Microcystis aeruginosa, and that a highly toxic strain causes zebra mussels to produce large quantities of mucous pseudofaeces, 'pseudodiarrhoea', that are periodically expelled hydraulically through th...

Cytogenetic characterization of the Zebra Mussel Dreissena polymorpha (Pallas) from Miedwie Lake, Poland.

Cytogenetic characterization of D. polymorpha was carried out using banding techniques such as C-banding, fluorochrome CMA3 and silver nitrate treatment. The diploid chromosome number of both investigated D. polymorpha forms (typical and albinotic) was the same 2n = 32 (NF = 56). The karyotype consisted of 5 pairs of metacentric, 7 pairs of submetacentric and four pairs of subtelo-acrocentric c...

Lysosomal membrane stability and respiration rate in zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha Pallas, 1771) as biomarkers for ex situ heavy metal exposure

Background and purpose: In the current study we aimed to investigate the lysosomal membrane stability in haemocytes of the invasive mollusk zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha Pallas, 1771) by applying the neutral red retention assay (NRRA), as well as changes in the respiration rate and survival under acute heavy metal exposure. Materials and methods: The mussels were treated with different dec...

The horticultural trade and ornamental plant invasions in Britain.

Ornamental horticulture has been recognized as the main pathway for plant invasions worldwide. We examined the link between propagule pressure created by the presence of ornamental plants in the market and their ability to escape from cultivation and establish in the wild. A random sample of 534 non-native ornamental species on sale in nineteenth century Britain showed that 27% of these species...
