Historians Killed for Political Reasons in Ibero-America (1920-2020)

This essay examines the Ibero-American history producers who were killed for political reasons during past century. It presents sixty victims from eight countries. Of these, 83% by state forces, 17% non-state forces. Dictatorships had worst scores (58% of victims), while flawed democracies also saw considerable casualties (32%), in contrast to emergent (7%) and stable (3%). Much evidence was found thesis that killing these did not necessarily mean erasure their names or achievements. Out victims, nine (15%) mainly partly related historical works. Six however, occurred under democracies, particularly dictatorships. finding leads hypothesis well-entrenched dictatorships, wielding ruthless power, deter block incriminating research – making history-related relatively rare whereas freer conditions prompt encourage such dangerous research. Those investigating systemic violence crimes previous dictatorships then risk becoming targets military seeking install restore authoritarian rule.
