Highlights from a review of microplastics in marine sediments

چکیده

The ubiquity of microplastics (MPs) has now been demonstrated throughout Earth's geographic areas in both terrestrial and marine environments. Marine ecosystems are the end point plastic waste cycle, sediments increasingly considered to be a sink for debris, with possible deleterious effects on seafloor ecosystems. However, low concentration MPs complex matrix such as sediment makes their reliable analysis difficult. MP is usually determined by various extraction procedures followed optical, spectroscopy or mass spectrometry techniques, therefore hard compare. Therefore, determination challenging task. Here we present short review studies dealing analytical protocols detection discuss advantages different techniques used. This literature reveals that most 70 were carried out European Asian coastal use NaCl saturated solution, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) far most-used steps separation, digestion identification, respectively. Based this body literature, recommendations suggestions future research order increase reliability results facilitate inter-comparison. H2O2 solution strongly recommended separation steps, respectively, whereas during filtration step it necessary choose filter type based identification technique. More thorough investigation needed establish systematic protocol identification. A combination would permit identify all items, personal bias could avoided if automatic was implemented. Nanoplastics (NP) occurrence also discussed, although no data available date.

Microplastics as contaminants in the marine environment: a review.

Since the mass production of plastics began in the 1940s, microplastic contamination of the marine environment has been a growing problem. Here, a review of the literature has been conducted with the following objectives: (1) to summarise the properties, nomenclature and sources of microplastics; (2) to discuss the routes by which microplastics enter the marine environment; (3) to evaluate the ...

The physical impacts of microplastics on marine organisms: a review.

Plastic debris at the micro-, and potentially also the nano-scale, are widespread in the environment. Microplastics have accumulated in oceans and sediments worldwide in recent years, with maximum concentrations reaching 100 000 particles m(3). Due to their small size, microplastics may be ingested by low trophic fauna, with uncertain consequences for the health of the organism. This review foc...

Microplastics in the marine environment.

This review discusses the mechanisms of generation and potential impacts of microplastics in the ocean environment. Weathering degradation of plastics on the beaches results in their surface embrittlement and microcracking, yielding microparticles that are carried into water by wind or wave action. Unlike inorganic fines present in sea water, microplastics concentrate persistent organic polluta...

Sources and fate of microplastics in marine and beach sediments of the Southern Baltic Sea—a preliminary study

Microplastics' (particles size ≤5 mm) sources and fate in marine bottom and beach sediments of the brackish are strongly polluted Baltic Sea have been investigated. Microplastics were extracted using sodium chloride (1.2 g cm-3). Their qualitative identification was conducted using micro-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (μFT-IR). Concentration of microplastics varied from 25 particles kg...
